A stray who outranked every politician in Greece
When the debt crisis broke Greece, the people took Syntagma Square — and a ginger stray took the front line with them. Cafe owners fed him sausages, so Athens named him Loukanikos. Sausage.
From the December 2008 uprising through the great anti-austerity strikes, he was at nearly every riot in Athens. Always ahead of the crowd. Always barking at the police, never at the protesters. Tear gas canisters landed next to him and he barked at those too. Riot cops kicked him; he came back the next strike.
He made the front page of nearly every newspaper in Greece, ran on TV around the world, and closed out 2011 featured in TIME's Person of the Year issue. Not bad for Dog No. 1842 of the Athens stray registry.
